TRIESTE, TS

manifesto // Superblock

The history, culture, aesthetics, and environment of Trieste were analyzed to create the manifesto showing the evolution of the city as well as its strengths and weaknesses.  An environmental analysis on the impacts of climate change prompted the application of a super block framework for the city, in which small scale applications to combat the effects of climate change and improve local environments can be applied.

* Project completed as a collaborative effort with partners Anton Beil, Pasquale De Sario, Anna Manfrinati, and Sebastian Martinez  Espinoza

environmental analysis

A technical analysis of different environmental factors was conducted to view the specific impacts on the city of Trieste.  Flash flood, NDVI, Albedo, and UHI were calculated to identify the areas in the city with the most environmental hazards.

superblock framework

The divisions within the super block framework are located based on the existing urban fabric of Trieste. Borders are defined based on neighborhood characteristics, spatial utilization, and major roadways. The framework provides a structure for small scale interventions to be applied within each block based on the most pressing needs.

individual work

In the North of the city, there is a district which serves as the connection between the central station in Trieste and the historical center.  This area is at high risk of flash flood and urban heat island, and has low levels of surface reflectance, poor vegetation health, and intense traffic.  To combat these factors, non-arterial roadways are re-designated as pedestrian zones utilizing permeable pavements, greenery, street furniture, and other tactical urbanism strategies.
